Diesel Fuel, Water and Ice – not a combination that works well underfoot, were the major safety risks for staff using the Fuelling Island at Crown Point Rail Depot at Norwich, the challenge was to provide a Non-Slip, Durable Floor Finish that would meet the needs of this very busy facility, and Kettles provided the solution in the form of a quick-curing epoxy system.
Once the surface preparation was complete, John Mays & Tony Eppy had to work quickly to ensure that the primer coat was deployed within the strict timeframe, and then apply the top-coat into which the Non-Slip Aggregate was broadcast, the result is a non-slip finish that will perform as requested, making the fuel island a safer place to work.
Engineering Services - Manager Paul Browne:
“We have recently engaged Kettles Limited to provide a solution to reduce previous incidents of slips/trips and falls at a heavily utilised train fuelling installation.
The Hazards in this area were due to standing water and diesel fuel oil with the added risk due to the potential for freezing. Drivers are required to both access and egress trains during the refuelling operation so the potential for harm was high.
The applied product provided a hardwearing covering after suitable cleaning and preparation with excellent non-slip properties due to the size of aggregate incorporated into the applied product.
The operatives conduct was exemplary despite the awkward nature of implementation without detriment to our ability to operate. They were very safety conscious and rigidly adhered to both their own Method Statement and our Safe System of Work that we issued to cover the works”
